One question I see asked a lot is, “How long should my post be?”, and the answer to that is simple, “As long as it needs to be to get your point across.” Bloggers tend to feel that a post should be at least x number of words; that just isn’t the case.
I have seen a lot of potentially good posts ruined because the author wanted to add “words” to it just to try it make it fit some ideal length. My advice is to say what you have to say and end it. Don’t ruin a beautiful picture with unnecessary details.

Do you try to keep your posts to a minimum length? Have you seen good posts gone bad because the author rambled on?

Yes. I agree. They are okay as long as they are straight to the point. Flowery words’ sometimes a turn-off.

It’s funny but I tend to either have about one sentence to share or 1000 words. I’m trying to work on finding the middle ground!

As long as they need to be and not a word longer, If I think a post is too long I just throw in a “more”.

I’m with Dana. I’ll either write a short paragraph and then wonder if it’s worth posting, or else I won’t realise until I’ve hit publish that I’ve written an essay! I always remember from English classes at school that when I wrote my essays (had to be 500+ words), when I couldn’t quite make 500 words and had to pad it out then it wouldn’t get a great grade. However the one and only essay I wrote and the words just flowed, and easily beat the 500 word mark, was the only essay I got above average. So I guess to learn from that is that if you simply write a post, let the first draft be the one to post (of course after spelling and grammar checks!). Don’t mess around with it after as it’ll lose the natural feel of it.

“If I’d had more time I’d have written less” a quote that gets a lot of use on a training course called Effective Writing Skills at the company I work for. The course is aimed at consultants who have to write formal proposals to sell work, but I think the principle applies to all writing.

Agreed. I tend to lose interest in long posts unless they’re really gripping. Some of my posts are a little long though…

Amazingly, all my posts somehow end up around the same length.

Hi, I have read your post of about how much the author’s posts lenghth must be. I agree fully on your post that it should not spoil the pictures with too much length. I also feel that the blog writing must be in a short in length and should cover everything he wants to cover.
