Blogging on the Weekends
August 26th, 2007 by ses5909Looks like you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed so you don't miss a single conversation! Thanks for visiting!
Most blogs I read take the weekend off which is kind of disappointing. The ones that don’t take the weekends off post links of some sort (including this one). Something I try to post is a round-up of interesting or popular topics from the forums in hopes it will help get more participation and new sign ups so I hope it offers something more than just a set of external links, but maybe not.
I recently read this great article on Posting low quality blog posts on the weekends and the author made some GREAT points!
Have you considered the first time visitor who may drop by? Do you really want them to come to your blog for the first time only to see an article that you consider to be of a lower quality than usual? Remember that you only have one chance to create a positive first impression
Martin has really given me something to think about here. How can I better better balance out my blog for my current readers and potential audience. I know I read blogs on weekends. I wanted to point this article out to everyone and get your opinions on it. I will also leave you with two questions:
1. Do you read blogs on the weekends?
2. Do you post on the weekends and if so, is it lower quality than your weekday posts?

It was my pleasure Martin! You really have given me a lot to think about and on this particular issue, I’m still trying to think what is the best way to go. Traffic is definitely cut in half here on the weekends, but there should still be some quality content here so the people who do visit will hopefully stay, and perhaps with better weekend content, traffic would improve.

I’ll probably end up posting more on the weekend than during the week, simply because I have more time and energy then.

I read blogs on weekends. And I post on weekends. But I don’t have a schedule for better posts versus crappier posts. And I don’t think it really matters all that much. Regular readers know to expect crap. Search engine one-offs are probably going to get second impressions, eventually, even if the first impression was bad, if you’re consistently creating any sort of content. Maybe it’s unique to my own experience, but so far, the only significant trend I’ve noticed is posting = traffic, and not posting = loss of traffic. But maybe patterns regarding quality and crap become more clear at highly-trafficked blogs?

I generally don’t publish new posts on the weekend unless it is related to a site change or otherwise important. Instead, I usually post my version of a weekly roundup sometime on Friday that highlights 10-12 good posts from the past week with brief commentary on each.
Since traffic is relatively light on the weekends I find that a good link love post to get people through is sufficient. Sure, more original content is always good, but I also need a break as well. You have to have balance.

If the weekend were three days long, I would probably post on the third day, and it would be my best post of the week. I find that on long weekends, or vacations, by the third day I’m relaxed and eager to work on something new.
If only we had a little more time off.

I let my blog run my life for 5 days outta the week, so the other 2 days are for my wife to run

I’m in a bit of an unusual situation myself. I’ve had to deal with three service related disabilities over the years that have become significantly worse with age (can’t stop that aging thing can you?). So since disability compensation isn’t enough to allow me to quit the day job, I have had to go to 4 days a week part time. By the time the work day is done I’m pretty much shot so it’s usually only small posts during the week, even having to miss a night or two. Come the weekend, which has turned into a three day affair that I need to get back on my feet from the work week, I’m writing up my main posts. Still can’t figure out how I got that PR 5.
Lord only knows what I’d be putting out if I went from 70% to 100% disability so I could take care of myself properly and could blog full time.
And could the world take it?

I go to school full time soon the weekends I catch up on others blogs, commenting and write a few posts that arent time-sensitive for the week to come. I only post if somethin really big happens.

That’s a great point about first time visitors arriving at weekends. Sometimes, in the past, I posted a kind of ‘wind-down Friday’ post, with perhaps a relevant YouTube video on design for instance.
They tend not to draw that many comments, so I’d probably be better leaving a previous one up top.
Regardless, tomorrow I have a bumper one planned, my first anniversary blog prize draw. There are some fantastic donations from some top bloggers. It’s fair to say it’ll be my best ever Saturday article.

I read more blogs in the weekends than any other days, simply have more time for it then. Although weekends for me aren’t necessarily you’re ordinary Saturday/Sunday, my schedules tend to be sort of weird so it can be pretty much any day in the week on which it starts with commonly your Saturday/Sunday along, but not always.
My own blogging sadly enough doesn’t really improve in the weekends though I must say, actually it has been pretty much going downwards for quite some time since I’ve been busy for the summer but I’m working on getting up from that again, coming back much better than before :); or at least I hope :P.
