Default Not Depending On Google For Traffic

This is a phrase I've seen around town a fair amount, but I've yet to see anyone provide (or even attempt) a real answer as to how it's accomplished.

Common sense tells us all that it's probably not the best idea to depend on one source for most of your visitors, especially if you're blogging for income to pay your bills.

What are some of the things you do to increase your traffic aside from Google and StumbleUpon? What methods would you recommend to other people?

In my opinion pinging is the thing that makes you quite independed from Google for traffic. My vision is like this.

1. You create quality content on your blog.
2. It gets pinged.
3. Other sites in your niche *grab* the digest of this content on their sites.
4. You get traffic from these sites.

Yes, it's another question where exactly these "other" sites are getting this traffic from. But you do not care - you get traffic of targeted people. And not from the SERPs in Google.

P.S. Though according to my personal experience and tests pining also helps to improve your SERPs.

One of my sites gets a lot of traffic from Wikipedia. The site has been live for 18 months now and just until last week, only a few pages of it were indexed.

And Wikipedia gets the bulk of their traffic from Google. In that respect, allmighty G is almost always at the top of the pyramid unless it's direct traffic.
