Do you have a favicon for your blog? If not why not?? A favicon is another way to brand your site I think.
I have one for a few sites and I just put one up for ilovecode

Gotta have one. http://snook.ca/favicon.ico ... and if you're curious on how to make one, I even wrote a post on it (http://snook.ca/archives/design/making_a_good_favicon/). :)

Not yet, I need to actually design my own theme first before I move on to favicons ... but once that's done, then I'll definitely be adding one (which reminds me, I need to create a couple for my other sites). :P

in these days of tabbed browsing ala FireFox and now IE7 it's pretty much becoming a mandatory feature.
I used to think it was just a vanity thing until I realized 404 errors for my favicon not being there were taking up valuable harddrive space on my server :(

No I don't use any because I don't know what to choose as my favicon :)

I used to have one that I made, but then I changed servers and they have a default one in place so I just kept it. I need to make a new original one. :)

Ahh, you have found one of the bugs I'm too lazy to fix :)
I do have an X, but in a few parts of my theme I have some calls to the favicon that came with that particular theme. So depending on where you are on my site you will see an X or that gray and white box with a circle in the middle.
Great, now I have to actually work on my website today now that the world knows about my mistake :p

OK, Sara and Snookca. I have been planning on adding a favicon. After reading this post. I tried it.
I created the favicon.ico fine. But I think I either put it in the wrong directory or my path is wrong. I use Wordpress hosted by dreamhost. I thought the root file was the first one that holds everything else.
Should I maybe put it in the theme file or some other wordpress folder. Any help will be appreciated.
Also if I ever get it right I'll post about it and include a link so Snookca's post plus some other good ones I found.
Thanks

no you should put it in the root of your website... I don't see it there though:
http://www.itswritenow.com/favicon.ico
the root might be httpdocs or webroot..something like that.
Thanks Sara, that path was actually what I needed. It is there now and I also had to change the html in the header to reflect this path. It's not showing up yet. But maybe after I reboot. Anyway a step in the right direction. Thank-you.

It's there, Emma.
Thanks, it shows up in firefox. Maybe I'll just have to wait until ie7 figures it out. OK I got it to work in IE7 as well. I guess this browser caches the history of icons. But clearing the history didn't help. But changing the name of the icon cleared it out. Now I have a post for next week. Thanks Everybody.

Harrison, generally your FAVICON should be one that represents your site. :D
you can refer to mine, how the favicon is part of the site design.
The same used throughout the entire site. I need to change it though .. my branding is a tad different now ..

@starfeeder - I moved your post to a different thread to show off your favicon. Just wanted to let you know :)

*sighs* I sort of have one. It still shows up at my TypePad address, but not at my new domain. And I really don't get that...

Yup yup! We've had a favicon on our site for years now. It's not flashy, but certainly easy to make out.

To get IE to make favicons show up you need to clear the cache and also do a restart.

I had one but it looked to much like the human rights campaign logo ie yellow equal sign on blue back ground so I need a new one.
And now I have one its pretty simple but it I think it looks pretty good

I finally made one for my wanderingfamily blog. The main image on the blog is

so Deron's world icon was a perfect fit!

How is the best way to create a nice smooth favicon? I've seen really detailed ones in the past that are really clear however anything I've ever tried doing has come out pretty naff. I have Photoshop, access to Illustrator (although don't know the first thing about it really!) and know about using the original favicon software. Is there something I'm missing?

I create mine using Fireworks. Obviously I didn't create the globe one, but I created the others. Are you getting too detailed with them maybe?

To be honest I've only played with a couple. I maintain a swiss watch site and at present the favicon is a really naff version of a Rolex Submariner that I 'drew' and it looks like a 5 year old did it! (mind you my design and drawing skills are that of a 5 year old :D ).
I've tried taking a photo of one (on a white background) and shrinking it down, and it's just barely legible. I guess it probably is too detailed as you say.
