Mom Gadget (http://momgadget.com/top-10-overkill/) recently asked it's audience if they were sick of seeing so many top 10 lists.

I can say I am kind of getting tired of it and I love stumbling on a good old post full of prose. I think even more I dislike that I find myself writing more and more in lists :o

The problem is that they're an incredibly reliable way to grab lots of traffic. I wrote my "6 keys to modern css" article to prove the theory and it's been my most popular article ever. People are looking for a quick and easy way to absorb new information. Lengthy prose will only scare them away. There's still a market for it but it'll attract a different audience and you'll need to cultivate that audience in a different way (ie: not digg).

You're definitely right, there is a huge audience for it and it's typically these posts that get dugg. Personally, they just get to me after a while, especially when everyone is making lists on the same topic.

yeah, I agree with you. But some how people still likes to read top 10 list. They can just scan through the list in few minutes. It is easy to read and save time. I think this is the main reason why top-10 list still work. So our job is make some top 10 list that is unique and can stand out the crowd.

I like it sometimes, just gets to the point instead of some long winded post, but i saw at Mashable many were complaining of the endless lists.

But Mashable's lists tend to be of the Top 150+ variety. That's really annoying. Until they post a list of things that suit your interests. Then it's freaking awesome!

They work because they reflect the way most users interact with unfamiliar content - which is to scan read.

I dont mind the lists everynow and then, its the execessive listing of links to other sites posts, once a week is fine, every day =ridiculous.

You hit the nail on the head. As a person that likes to read the top 10 lists on a variety of subjects it is because I like to just glance and scan. That is so easy to do with top 10 lists.

I love top ten lists. For a variety of reasons but mostly because most of them are fun and I like to read fun things.
