View Full Version : Bloggers and their day jobs

One of the reasons that I only post on my blog once a week is that I have a day job that takes up most of my time (usually 8-6) five days a week and my blogging is done in my "spare" time.

How many others here also have a full time job? Who works as a contractor / freelancer? Who works for a small agency / self-owned company, etc?

How do you fit blogging in?

I'm stretched pretty thin. I work a 9-5 (after commute time, more like 8-6) and I try to maintain my blog with 5 new posts per week. And on top of that, I am a freelance writer over at about.com which requires multiple new pieces per week.

It sucks, because I have virtually no free time, but the ability to double my income by spending time on the computer every night is more than worth it. Of course, I don't have kids yet either, so I have to take advantage of it while I can afford the time.

I work as a full-time work-from-home freelancer and when I'm busy (like now) it's very difficult to fit my blogs into my schedule. When I'm not busy, I fill up a couple of files with posts that I can publish later or use the WordPress save feature. Even then, I often end up taking time I don't have to re-edit them.

I worked full-time up until a month ago. Now I'm basically a freelancer, although I'm working on getting some other business started.

My blogs definitely get more attention now than when I was working full time, mostly because I can write whenever an idea hits me. Otherwise, I'd have to wait until the end of the day when I've lost any will or desire to write.

I work from 8am to 4:30 pm but I have a 30 minute drive home so it's basically an 8-5. I blog in my free time from 5pm - 12pm or so. Like Jeremey, I don't have kids yet, so I have to take advantage and get as much work done as I can. I have four or five sites I'd like to get online soon, but it difficult trying to get those ready as well as blog at the same time.

I work from home from about 8:30 to 6, plus evenings if I have to (although I try not to let my work get like that).

My spare time is divided between working on my own sideline sites/businesses, reading blogs and blogging myself. I tend to blog when I have the time and something to write about, usually when I want a distraction from work, late at night or on the weekends, hence why my posts all come at once and then none for a while!

You know, I keep reading that having a blogging schedule and keeping to it is important, but it certainly does become more and more restrictive. I think I just may follow your lead here. Thanks for posting... I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who it's a problem for.

No problem shyflower. I can't keep to a schedule as my weeks change constantly. For example on Saturday I'm off down south until Monday evening. Next week, who knows! Hopefully not too far, I need a break from driving!

I have a full-time job as a self-owned (with a partner) company. I mainly provide development services (to include blog integration and consulting) for clients, but I am trying to diversify that a bit by having a collection of our own sites in our portfolio.

It gets hard to find time to do everything I want to do definitely and unfortunately my blogs sometimes get neglected. Right now I am traveling over the next couple of weeks so that just adds to it and makes it even harder. :sigh:

I have a full-time job as project manager/programmer at local web development company, but my contract covers work from home, so I don't need to go to the office every day which is great.
