Matt Cutts, at WordCamp, suggested installing your blog in a directory rather than in the root of your site so in case you ever want to add something to your site, it's much easier to do.
Does anyone do that? I don't on my personal blogs but do here.

Yeah I did, thinking that exact thing!
And for the timebeing, I have simply redirected the root to the blog directory.

Yes, it is in the root. I have enough of registered domains so I can always use another one if I wanted to do something different. :D

That's exactly what I did - and why I did it :).

I'm off the root because I originally intended to use the root. And now I don't which makes the landing page a little dull. I plan to change that eventually... it just hasn't happened.

I don't think it matters tbh. All that matters are your URLs.
My URLs are set up as domain.com/category/post/. If I disable WordPress at some point, then I have a nice little folder system there. If I want to add a gallery, I can just add it to domain.com/gallery/ regardless of where WordPress is. If having all the files in the root actually did annoy me then I'd just shift them into a subdirectory without affecting any of my URLs anyway etc. It just doesn't matter. :)
What I wouldn't do is have the blog on subdirectory purely because you "might" do something else at some point. No-one wants to go through splash pages these days, so you need a better reason than that. At the very least, I'd 301 the root page directly to the blog home page. You're getting the best of both worlds that way. :) (That was the sometimes I mentioned. I have another site set up like that where I'm using a subdomain for my site, and the actual domain is redirecting)

Yep! Love those WordPress permalinks, too!

I have 2 blogs on one domain so when I switched to my new domain I put both into directories. My front page pulls the last posts from these two blogs plus another on a different domain. Makes the site look busier ;)
However any single blog domain has it in the root. It's easy to switch your frontpage to something different if you need to. Besides creating a static front page with WordPress and simply creating another page to list your last 10 posts on, you could always just rename your index.php file to index1.php. That's how I used to have it before switching.
But I'd just use WordPress's static page functionality as it's dead simple to use.

TypePad automagically puts the blog in a directory. I think it's because, when you upgrade, you can add more blogs, select which one is the default, or use a non-blog page as your front page. It annoyed me when I first signed up, but now, I'm kind of liking it.

Mine is in the root. I like it better that way. :)

Both of ours are in the root... But I've got nav tabs at the top of both blogs page that let visitors browse off to static pages and yet it all still has the same look & feel.

I have all of my sites on my domain in folders. I then have a quick redirect written up to redirect subdomains to sub folders to make it look a little cleaner.

I have mine installed in the root directory. At the time I wasn't gonna use my domain for anything else, but now that you mention it, maybe I should move it.
One is in a directory and one in the root .. depends on my needs.
