They are becoming more and more popular in blogging community. So what is your opinion about tumblelogs? Can they replace traditional blogs? What are the benefits of running one?

I did think they where the same thing :) But upon Googling the term I can see that Tumblelogs seem to be shorter and can be about many different topics. Seems twitterish to me. But - that conclusion is based on a 2 second Google search.
I think that they would both be good for delivering different forms of content. Blogs provide a tradtional article like format - probably good for someone blogging about something serious, a formal topic or something that is going to be in depth.
Tumblelogs seem more rampant in nature and provide a quick way of announcing something, providing a quick opinion...
Maybe I have it all wrong though. Man I am learning a lot here though :)

I don't quite "get" them. alot have blogs have can have posts resembling that of a tumbleblog, but the other posts still have meat in them. A tumbleblog just wouldn't seem personal at all and where is the opportunity to have a conversation?

Yeah, I'm not sure I get them as well. To me, those seems more like a personal bookmark for a person who runs it.

The lack of comments isn't a hard-and-fast rule to tumblelogs. The main issue there is that in order to have a tumblelog right now you have to either write your own system or use something like tumblr (http://tumblr.com). I can't think of any off the shelf tumblelog system that allows comments, and most of the people who have written their own don't want to deal with writing their own comment systems, dealing with the spam, etc. I'm sure lots of tumbleloggers would use a system that allowed comments if they could. Also, you can usually throw up "regular posts" on a tumblelog as well in between your quotes, images, etc.
A lot of people also use tumblelogs to supplement their regular blog with "quick content" like links or images. Some examples: http://www2.jeffcroft.com/, http://marco.org/
Tumblelogs are just like blogs, except they go at a much quicker/shorter pace. Think of it like the Cliffs Notes of blogging :)
