I've had one guy taunt me into getting onto IRC so he could berate me on how wrong my post was. C'mon...if you're going to argue the points of an article at least take the effort to do it up front. He was promptly ignored.

One of the first comments on my blog was actually a guy telling me how useless the article I wrote was. I thought about deleting it but instead left it in place and simply said, "Sorry you didn't get anything out of it." Then, the next bunch of comments were all in defense of the article.

Since then, I've had really good comments. I've been very pleased about the type of people that visit and participate on my site. I believe that if you set the right tone and nip it in the bud, maintaining civil discourse is relatively easy.

Few times, but it was more of a personal attack than related to my writings. Those got deleted.

Me too! I actually am very provoking, I like to make people think and I don't do that at all on my blog. I tend to take the opposite side of what somebody is saying and just have a very fun time debating, even if I don't really believe in that side. I'm still trying to get a feel for this whole blogging thing and hopefully when I get a little braver I will post something that causes something to spark a little.

I didn't get a comment yet, but I did get an e-mail about my current group writing project. He didn't like the way that I worded it. They don't like the "How-to" ... it should be How to (with no quotes) according to him. And I should have called it an essay, not a post. Of course we went back and forth atleast 3 times, which I was very nice I swear and was happy to be in a little debate with somebody who actually cares to about how something is worded. I said life is too short to argue about semantics in blog posts. None the less, this guy turns out to be a college professor. And I finally just said, do you know what blogging is? I haven't heard from him since.

Thankfully no. Whilst the occassional one probably wouldn't be so bad these things can turn ugly (look at what happened to Kathy Sierra).

Question is, would you publish hate comments? I wouldn't. I don't want that level of commenting on my site. Disagreeing is not hate, but true hate is something I hope I don't experience.

I got an email from someone that told me my opinions on heavy metal music are incorrect but no "hate" comments. :p

No i didn't publish the "hate" comments, and I wish they hadn't of happened but what can you do?

I did have a comment where the guy was just rude on my Please someone stop me (http://www.ilovecode.com/2007/08/26/please-someone-stop-me/) post where I talked about how i can't quit buying domains. He said

this was a marketing post if there ever were one to lure visitors, as if anyone cares about you buying a domain ?

the guy must not know me very well because typically you don't market a site unless it's up and well this site could be up next week or next year or even later.

Oh there's certainly nothing you can do to prevent them unfortunately. Some people want to stir up an argument. They take linkbait a little too far.

I've been the recipient of someone's online persona looking to rip me apart on a BBS I used to frequent at University (the days before MSN and IRC!). I don't know what his problem was and it was pretty upsetting, but then again I take most things to heart!

I haven't had any real hate comments. I've had a post make it to the front page of digg and there were enough negative comments on digg itself (mostly about the site design at the time), but that really didn't bother me (and is to be expected). The closest I've come is a guy who commented on a couple of my "Tips" posts and basically said "Yeah, I already do this but better". He posted basically the same comment on a couple of posts, I'm convinced it was just to get a link to his own blog in. It didn't really work as the comment links are no-follows and not a single person clicked on his links. I can only assume it was his arrogance that put people off.

Nope...not yet. I suppose if I did it would depend on how valid and 'entertaining' it was as to whether I'd leave it up. I don't mind a debate as long as the commenter is intelligent about it and not just there to hassle.

Nope, no hate mail yet.

I did have one guy trying to pick holes (http://www.problogdesign.com/how-to/cut-category-clutter-and-toggle-visibility/#comment-577) in a technique I recommended, but it wasn't personal and he was dead wrong, so I didn't mind. :D

I had someone get angry with me once, but we worked it out -- right there in the comments.

Then we both got praise for being so reasonable and cooperative.

Except for disgusting spam, that's pretty much the worst I've had.
