A good and easy idea for a post is a blog tip where essentially you give 3 reasons why you like the blog and some feedback on how to improve it. I think any blogger whether niche or not could take advantage of this. Do you participate in blogtipping?

Except for this month (because I've been enduring some DNS issues with my site host) I post a Blogtipping (http://www.2dolphins.com/labels/Blogtipping.html) entry on the first Monday of each month. I usually try to tie the featured sites together with some kind of common theme, but sometimes it's just potpourri...

What kind of reaction do you get from that?

I don't because I already have a list of things that I want to change on my blog - I don't need any more :)

I always send the bloggers whose sites I've "tipped" a little note letting them know and the response is usually very positive. (There've been a couple of times I got no reply at all...)
A bit late, but nonetheless, I finally got my September Blogtipping (http://www.2dolphins.com/2007/09/september-suggestions.html) entry posted this morning.

Are these reviews of your own site, or different sites?
Each Saturday I post a design review (http://www.problogdesign.com/blog-design-reviews/) of another blog, with both what I like about it, and what I would change. I try to keep the number of each pretty similar. :)
They work well on my blog because they are essentially blog design case studies.

You review a different site, but a site that you do in fact like. So, it's a recommendation to your readers but also you are offering advice to the recommended blogger.

I'm going to try to review one site a week on my blog. I never heard of "blogtipping" before this thread. It looks like a good format for reviewing a blog. :) (Thanks Sara!!!)

For people who do this, do you generally contact the blog's owner before hand, or just go ahead and do it? I used to sell a Website Audit service that included a complete assessment of a site, this may be a good means to promote a more cut down version of that service.

Now that's an interesting idea. I'd have to wait to wait for the right opportunity though since it would have to land in an area where I actually know what I'm talking about. I'll keep this one mind for sure though.

@Simon - if I were to do it, I would probably just do it and notify the blogger that I did it. After all, I am recommending their blog so I don't really see the need to get permission.

Blogtipping (http://www.businessblogwire.com/blogtipping/) is a pretty straightforward concept that I borrowed from Easton Ellsworth over at BusinessBlogWire: Link to three unsuspecting blogs with three compliments & one helpful comment, suggestion, or idea for each. It's an opportunity to share noteworthy sites with your readers and at the same time give some fellow bloggers a nice pat on the back.
I don't tip 'em off in advance, so this isn't really what you'd consider a review. But I do always send the bloggers in question a nice note right after I've posted my Blogtipping article so they'll know someone was saying nice things about them.
This is much more preferable to me than a simple blogroll because I'm not only making available links to other sites, but I get to explain why I think it's worth your time to go check it out.
