How to stop using it?

Oh, no! Don't stop using it! It's only a problem when you start using it in verbal communication with offline friends and introducing yourself as one of your online usernames when you meet strangers in bars.

It can be overdone definitely but this is very common in in forums and chat. If you'd like we can point it out everytime you do it :D

I cant stand LOL because everytime I see it I read it as Laugh Out Loud and it doesnt make sense when you expand it.

"Text speak" is really starting to impact student writing. It's almost like they don't understand that the way you IM and chat with your friends is not acceptable for more formal situations. They don't seem to be able to adapt to different writing situations and purposes.
I'm generalizing, of course, but it's a trend I'm seeing.
