For those that use adsense, have you tried removing advertisers from your list? When I first through TBE up here, most of the ads were for laboratory equipment. I had to remove them from my list. Have you tried to improve the ads your site shows?

I would definitely do this if I decide on adsense. Although at the moment, text link ads is looking like the better option.

On other projects I always remove any competitors or "content targeted" sites are way off the mark. I'll also scope out and remove those nasty made for adsense (MFA) websites that have extremely low payouts.

My filter is full (200 or so sites is the limit I believe).

Removed all the low payers, along with ads that were just not relevant. It's a shame however that you can't state an ad shouldn't shown on a particular site only, as we have a site where there were irrelevant ads for most of the site, but because these were big payers (but on the opposite extreme of the subject!), we set up an additional page on this subject to show the blocked ads. Luckily with two of us we have two adsense accounts!

I couldn't figure out how to do it. So I didn't bother.

Just click the Adsense Setup tab, then competitive ad filter. In the box that says "Enter URLs to filter from ads on your content pages." type the URLs of the ads you don't want to appear on your pages. Click save.
