Blog Carnivals, Challenges, Etc.

Do you participate in carnivals, challenges, etc., with an eye toward driving traffic? If so, has it worked for you?

well i just submitted a few of mine to some carnivals. they wont be published yet till another two weeks and then i'll see what happens =)

Would someone please ellaborate as to what these carnivals are? Thanks.

Vertexity: Blog carnivals are generally organized around a specific theme. Bloggers submit their posts that fit the theme. The carnival will be hosted at one blog, which links to all of the articles accepted to the carnival. Check out Blog Carnival (http://blogcarnival.com/bc/) for more info.

I've participated in a couple of these, and haven't seen much traffic from it, but part of that could be topic related.

On the other hand, the reading challenge I'm participating in (which is close to being a carnival, but not quite; it's set up just a little differently), has been driving a higher traffic than the carnivals, and it's not even in full-swing yet.

The reading challenge that I'm participating in involves reading just about any sort of "scary" books, then writing reviews of said books. This is the only reading challenge I've done, so I only know how this one works. There's one blog post set up for people to sign on, and another where people post as their reviews go live. I'm not seeing much traffic from the blog carnivals that I've been listed in, but I look at it as at least an incoming link. A few hits here and there are good, too.
