When you reference one of your old posts, you automatically get a pingback on your old post. Do you remove that or do you leave it?

I don't remove them. It can be a nice track for other visitors as well if they check out the comments.

Mine are all just waiting to be approved. I remember the first day I spotted these in the dashboard I had no idea what they we're, took me a few minutes to figure it out.

Is this a WordPress thing? I've never gotten a self-pingback, and I'm a self-referencing monster.

It might be Sam. Basically when you reference your own post it automatically writes a comment to the post you referenced. Pingbacks are very similar to trackbacks which I think typepad has.

It depends. If I am constantly referring back to a post (like my contest) I don't keep them around, they clutter things too much. If it's just a one off and is related, I usually leave it there in case the related posts plugin doesn't catch it.

I don't personally like to keep them. I already have a related post plugin and I also do go back to my old posts and link them to the new relevant posts as I planned them. Such as series or follow-ups.

Here is a plugin to keep wordpress from pinging yourself:

blogwaffe WordPress plugin: No Self Pings (http://blogwaffe.com/2006/10/04/421/)

Like Sam, I'm a deep-linking fool. I like to reference back to older posts whenever possible (and practical) to try to entice my readers to explore. Y'know, to get a bit more mileage out of past articles. And I like the linkbacks - they serve as another navigational aid.

Another one for keeping the pingbacks. Old posts can be improved and so by leaving the pingback there a visitor to the old post can maybe read on to the new post.

My only problem is half my pingbacks were on my old domain so have the wrong address on there! :D

There are many who believe that "Deep Linking" is good for SEO and another way for your readers to easily move to other content.

So I keep them but I'm like Glen. The generated emails are a pain. I'm surprised that a plugin hasn't been developed for WordPress to suppress sending emails for self ping/trackbacks.

Actually Gnomey specified a plugin in her post that does just that :D

Thanks for the rep Sarah, I didn't even realize we can give rep's so it is good to know. Glad I was able to share the plugin with you guys!

I keep them. If someone comes to an old post I've referenced through a search engine, I want them to be linked to the newer post I referenced it from.
