I always try to post a comment if someone mentioned one of my blogs or sites. I may not always see someone who mentioned the site until weeks later which sucks so this is a good reason to check your stats. Do you post a comment when someone mentions your blog?

By habit, I always check the site of a new commenter if one is given. This initially is to check to see if it's actually a real site especially in the case of trackbacks/pingbacks since once in awhile one might sneak through Spam Karma 2.3. If the site is real, then I leave a comment to show my appreciation.
Just for info's sake, I use the "Incoming links" feature in my WP Dashboard (Technorati) and my stats service (Pmetrics) to keep an eye on things and email notification for all comments left on my blog including those that get thrown into moderation by Spam Karma. So far I've only had two comments/trackbacks slip by me.

I think if someone links to the homepage, you don't get a trackback do you?

Unfortunately no, you don't. That's where Technorati and Pmetrics (in my case) come in handy since they should pick up the link back to home page as referral type of thing. It's not perfect but it covers it pretty well.
I also use the SEOQuake extension for Firefox which I set up to check Google's "Link:mysite.com" function and it's own links check which covers internal and external links in a simple list and notes whether it's NoFollow or not.
Of course I have to have time to check these things you know. :p
