Blog in the making

I am currently developing my blog and could use some pointers.

My preview can be seen here (http://www.vertexity.com/img/preview_layout1_ver2.jpg).

I welcome any comments, but there is something I need help with. The preview given will be my homepage. Would it be best to install the blog into it's own directory and creating a custom home page with excerpts from the blog or would it be better to install to the root directory?

I do not have anything else planned at the moment but I guess installing into it's own directory will leave me with more options for the homepage in the future. The thing I am worried about is how difficult it will be to achieve the custom page needed for the index if I do use a directory to install.

Also, I have another design which could be used. If you don't like the one in the preview given, please take a look at the other one which can be seen on my temporary page (link in sig) and let me know if you prefer that one.

All critiques are welcome and I am more than open to make any changes before anything is final.

So the decision between the 2 layouts has not been finalized as of yet? Though this one is nice, my vote is still for the other.

I would install WP in the same directory as the homepage. You can customize WP to do this. :)

The decision is not yet final. The problem I have faced is that both designs are really close in votes. The preview I posted here (layout 1) is the favourite at the moment which is why I decided to post that one.

Afterall I have to decide at some point and hopefully soon :)

Yes, the second can be seen on my temporary home page, link is in my sig.
I didn't want to post it here as the two are close vote wise and if I posted it, it may get some more posts and I would be stuck on choosing a design again.

Don't get me wrong though, I am still willing to use the second design - if people dislike the first.

I have since taken the layout I did for the homepage of my site and created a quick layout for viewing a full entry:

I'm not sure on the background yet. I may add a graphic somewhere in it or maybe an unobtrusive tiled texture.
