Here on TBE I don't moderate at all. I think the audience here would prefer that their comments show up immediately!

On a couple other blogs though, I moderate only the first comment from a user. After that point, their comments show up immediately. What do you do?

When I get mine up and running, I will probably just leave moderation off as there won't be many comments to begin with.

I may then turn it on if comment volume picks up.

I don't moderate, I don't require TypeKey authentication, and I don't use Captchas. (I got complaints about the latter two right after setting the blog up.) But I can delete really, really quickly.

I've only gotten one spam comment at this blog, though. Back on B2Evolution, spam was a nightmare!

Moderation on other blogs annoys me, but only a little. Not nearly enough to prevent me from commenting.

Thats one of the main reasons I wouldn't want to turn on moderation. I will have enough trouble getting people interested in commenting as it is without potentially turning some away.

Yes I do the same as you Sara approve the original comment then they just appear.

No, don't moderate. I do have a captcha in place but that is about to change as I'm getting ready to install the akismet spam plugin

Akismet catches about 1,000 spams on my site a day. That is its best feature.

I don't try to verify comments, but I do moderate them. I try to get the comments up within a couple hours of them being posted, but I don't get that many, so it's not hard. I get a lot of spam and inappropriate comments.

Well, I've not had the chance to try it yet so I can't comment on the benefits really (may be none besides the spam it supposedly catches). I've seen talk of people hating captchas so that's why I was going to implement the askismet. I heard it was very good at catching nearly all spam comments. I can fill you in later once I get it going (if I ever get around to installing it. lol)

Is Askimet for people who do not want to make users wait before their comment appears (no moderation)

Hmm, that's a good question. I searched but couldn't find an answer on their site.

I suppose it could work with moderation turned on as if someone submitted a spam comment, akismet could catch it and block it before you even needed to go in and moderate it, thus saving you time. Although, Akismet in itself is similar to moderation I guess. Even though it's good software, you can still have false positives so you still need to go in and check for those false positives and mark them "not spam" if they do in fact get caught as spam.

I will install it and see what it does! Though I doubt I get enough comments to actually need it. :p

I may have to look into something like this. I manually delete twenty to thirty spam comments on my writing blog every day.

That's what I do. I read them all so if a return user got too mouthy, I'd just delete him. :D

My preference on my wordpress is: Comment author must have a previously approved comment.

No akismet is a service which basically scans the comment looking for spammy content and if its a match, it gets thrown into the trash pile straight away. It really is awesome!!

I have installed it so I will be seeing first hand what it does now. :)

I moderate if the commenter doesn't have a previously approved comment. It is working well so far!
