Alot of us agree that MBL is a great way to grow your audience and discover new blogs. Quite often after I visit someone's profile or read their blog, I will get a comment thanking me for visiting. Do you thank people? Do you find people respond well to it? When i first joined i thought...why are these people spamming me? but now, not so much.

And is it bad MBL etiquette to not thank my readers?

I have an irrational fear of MyBlogLog. Someone thanked me the other day. I freaked, ran, and haven't been back.

But, yeah, it's probably good etiquette to express appreciation.

well, I wouldn't want to scare people away!

Undersocre on irrational. I doubt it's wide-spread.

I send thank you messages from time to time. I think that they're cool as long as they're genuine.

Yeah I send thank you messages to just about everyone that has visited. It's getting more difficult to keep up with thanking everyone, but I try. It's usually just a quick "Thanks for visiting my blog" message.

I just started with MyBlogLog, but I expect I'll send a few - especially if I see someone pop by more than once.

I send them to both people that visit my blog log page and those who visit my site.

So apparently I suck and need to get better with my MBL etiquette! I do try to visit the people's blogs who visit my site though and will comment if I have something to say.

I do not use MBL at all, what does it do other than allowing you to thank people for reading/visiting? :)

It helps you network.

Networking is a big part of it, but it also let's you know WHO specifically is reading your blog. Knowing numbers is great, but I think it's even cooler to know the names of the people who read. I know alot of us have readers, just not many commenters so this helps.

As Jeremy mentioned in another thread somewhere, you can also use it strategically. Seek out related blogs and you will appear in their MBL widget. I would guess that 75% of those people come to your blog to see what you're all about. It could help increase readers!

I say try it out!

I don't use it enough to go round thanking people for visiting
I'm sure people would prefer a comment on their blog rather than their profile

This is actually what I meant. It isn't networking like at Linked In or Biztalk, but it does help to spread the word about your Blog to people who wouldn't otherwise see it.

I don't use MBL. Maybe I should look into it. I don't email people who comment on my blogs, but I do usually leave a comment in response and/or visit their blogs and leave comments as well.

I don't usually thank people who "just" drop by -- I figure they're exploring around the way I do myself. I do thank people who join my communities on MBL, and usually make them a contact, too. On the other hand, I don't necessarily join their communities in return, unless I'm genuinely interested in their blog and plan to visit it pretty regularly. (I know you didn't ask about that last part, but thought I'd throw it in anyway. ;) )

i dont send out thank yous, i sent out Hellos!

MBL is another spam infested site.

Saying 'thank you' private message like is just that. The spammers using my member page...innocently or not that do 'thanks, come to XXX again'...are spammers...but that's my opinion. It isn't about 'one to one' thanking when it happens.

I don't use it too much. I did a lot when I started, but I've never really promoted my page, or tried to connect with anyone on it. I joined a few communities, and visited whoever joined mine (I check out their blogs as well as saying thank you).

I would like to be more active on MBL but cannot find the time. I occasionally say thank you to visitors but am more likely to thank those who add me. If you are concerned about it seeming spammy you can always send private messages.

I usually visit or comment on the blogs of people who visit my blog or leave a comment, though I just started with mybloglog and already im getting "admirers" and Im not too sure if I want to make everyone a contact or just a select few.

...Im not too sure if I want to make everyone a contact or just a select few.On a sidenote, that's a good point. Joining a community is one thing. Having a contact is another. I think too many newbies are seeing 'community join' and 'contacts' as the equivalent of Myspace 'friends'. :)

I have found that most people do, myself included.

I only do it for people joining my "community". And only for people who look real. Eg. I won't thank some member of 800+ blog communities...
