I want to start a blog but I don't know what I should blog about. Should it be one topic only or can it be a range of topics. Help!

Depends on what you want to do. Do you want to try to make money with it or just write for your own pleasure?

It can be a range of topics and quite often a personal blog is a good way to get your feet wet and figure out your blogging/writing style.

Not to mention what people want to read from you as well. I'll agree that a personal approach can work, but it can backfire on you if you're not careful (for example, if the CEO of a major multi-national corporation were to create a blog on the company Web site and then start blogging about how much he hates this, this and that).

I always say blog about something you love, so if you really love dogs then start a blog about dogs. This way you will not get bored or sick about writing on that subject.

What are your hobbies? What are you passionate about? - IMO - that's what you should be blogging about, or else it will grow stale very quickly.

I prefer blogs with a theme. Most of my favorite blogs are about writing or living the writing life (since that's what I do for a living, that's what I gravitate to), but I've also become enchanted by blogs about cats, fantasy characters, and even Barbie Dolls.

Sometimes the best way to decide what kind of blog you'd like to write is to think about the kind of blogs you like to read.

Good luck!

One question you need to answer if you're not sure what you want to blog about is that are you just going to blog for the sake of blogging and having a blog?

It really just depends on your interests! I'd make sure that I chose a topic that I'm committed to, because if you don't have a lot of commitment to your topic, you'll be more inclined to just give up on it. What do you like to do in your free time? What fascinates you? What would you like to learn more about? I've found out that by blogging, I'm encouraged to learn a lot about my topics. Just make sure it's something that you'd like to learn more about. :)

Good luck.

Interests interest interests. And something you can promote.

And something you can promote.

Definitely. That's something else that's very important. Make sure that whatever you choose to blog about, you can promote it. You don't want to pick something that's impossible to attract readers with or to advertise.

Write about what you love, other wise you wont love what you write
