Some people are so vehemently anti-blogs.

I've heard comments like "They are so self-indulgent. Why the hell do I want to know what you ate for dinner last night?"

The way I see it, they're like TV shows. If you don't like it, don't watch it. Doesn't mean TV is bad.

I guess there's no point in asking for opinions, because if you don't like blogs you wouldn't be here.

So let's just call this writing out loud.

Yes, I've heard that and just take it with a grain of salt. I agree with you.. if you don't like it, change the channel.

Yeah, you didn't ask for my opinion.. but I'm a blogger and I gave it anyway :D

Blogs are great. Everyone should have one. My friend actually asked me the other day (a non techie, mind you) 'What is a blog/What is your Blog?' I kinda told her it was like an online journal thingy and you talk about the things that interest you. Her reply as something like 'God, who could be bothered doing that, who would even want to'

Shame.

I'm an anti-blogger. :)

I think there is way too much hype around blogs. They're just another form of content delivery to me and not nearly as special as people make them out to be. But that's just my opinion.

I'm more along this line of thinking as a whole too ... however I do feel they have their place. Does everyone "need" a blog, I don't think so. I'd like to do a blog with my business simply because I like to help people ... and I think that would be a good way to do so. I have my personal blog right now simply to avoid having to explain what is going on to 50 different people! :P But if that wasn't the case, I probably wouldn't keep my blog up. It's all about purpose, don't have a blog because "it's the thing to do" but because you have something to say.

A blog is definitely another way to deliver content; but it is also alot more than that. If you want to look at the benefits to blogging from a non-blogger standpoint, here are some:

1. By having a "blog" you open yourself up to alot more marketing and networking possibilities that you wouldn't have otherwise. Places like MyBlogLog can bring you alot of traffic if you utilize them properly.

2. You put a personality with a blog. From a business perspective, customers typically will work with people they feel they can trust. By posting in a blog format, TYPICALLY, someone reveals more of their personality and shows that the company or website does have a human side and people will relate to that, thus increasing the level of trust.

3. You will more than likely increase the chance of repeat visitors to your site

4. An increased opportunity to demonstrate your expertise of a knowledge (especially in a niche market) and help build on your reputation.

Can't this be said of any good content?

Oh, I agree... they are another form of delivering content. I'm not someone that thinks they are particularly special, but there is a big difference between that and being anti...

Change the channel John :P

Blogging is a form of content delivery with a personal style and character.

I think the emphasis is more on the person delivering the content then the actual content itself.

Oh it is, Megan. I just wish I didn't have to put up with the word "blog" - it sounds too much like "bump on a log" to me. :p

Not really, no. While some blogs do come across more as article sites, the majority of them do have that "personality" which can help to build that trust.

Are you saying that articles or other forms of content can't have "personality"?

I do not like the word blog either Dan - didn't it used to be web-log? Or something like that.

No - I am not saying that other forms of content cannot have personality - its just that they serve different purposes. A blog is meant to be a personal veiw on a subject (imo) - it is the writer coming to terms about how they veiw a subject.

Articles can serve this purpose but mainly are reporting or reiterating what may already be known, they do offer an opinion but the scope, style and delivery of the information is different than that of a blog.

Blogs tend to be more colloquial in a sense, more relaxed and more personal - the personality of the writer really breaks through.

I don't know. That's just my opinion.

I am new to the blogging in general, I am debating on starting one. However I am not anti blog. I figure it is like all the other information on the web, you either click the link or bypass it. It isn't like the people who blog are forcing their blogs upon you, know what I mean? Anyway I say to each their own
