View Full Version : How did you get started blogging?

I came to the game fairly late, only a few months ago in fact. I had just had my new writer's website constructed, and everyone said it needed a blog, so...
I stumbled upon the idea for my weight loss blog after reading all those cheery articles about people who dropped one hundred pounds practically overnight. I wanted something realistic for people who sometimes went off their diets or lost weight slowly or got frustrated as hell.
How did you start blogging?

Interesting question, and I'm not sure I can even answer it considering how I sort of fell into it. In the past I had always run other types of websites, typically message board communities. That got to be a real pain in the ass and was making my hair turn gray earlier than I had liked, so I called it quits completely.
After about a year without an internet project going I was just thinking of something to do in my spare time to keep me busy. My wife has always complemented me on my communication skills and a friend of mine said I know quite a bit about finance, so I put two and two together and somehow created a blog.
If you had told me 10 months ago I'd be where I was now, I would have said you're crazy. I really just started because I enjoyed building a website, talking about something I knew, and killing some time tinkering around. That being said, there were numerous times where I had all but called it quits, but thankfully I toughed it out.
Prior to starting my blog I didn't even know what RSS was, never read any other blogs before, or anything. Now, that is all I do. Amazing how things work out sometimes.

Every time i have been online i have seen articles about blogging. So i was interested what does it mean. After that i started to read ebooks about blogging and it seems very interesting to me and i said to myself ''Why i don's start blogging when everyone does it''. And here i'm now blogging.

I just wanted to keep track of the all the St. Louis Cardinals' games one season. A blog seemed like a great way to do that.

Hmmm.... Well I started with my Msn Space and I just started putting a few bits and pieces in there. I have always been the writing type, kept journals, poetry and read a lot....And then I started writing a sort of 'Sex in the City' type collection for a little while incorporating my funny experiences as a single female. That turned into Girl About the World....Then SP came along and I started in with the IT stuff...It was a natural progression for me.

Well it started with a desire to learn Flash, then one day I no longer had the patience for tedious flash design (plus I was not very good at it)
I then realized that I had no idea how to design a regular web page (not a good one anyway) so I started playing around with HTML and CSS. I wrote and built http://www.cssbasics.com and then started learning about dynamic sites, but alas I did not know any programming languages to build my own.
Then I heard about premade CMS's so I tried my hand at a few of those but could never get anything going, then a friend (Amit) recommended WP to me, I started playing around with it.
I am not what I would really call a blogger, more of a web designer with a blog that gets updated rarely.

I just wanted to try it out and see what the fuss was about. I'll always try something once and it drives me crazy when people knock something without ever trying it. So I tried it and come to find out I liked it!

It started somewhere in 1999 or 2000. I used geocities or gurlpages that time.

I started blogging way back just because I was able to get my name as a domain name ... and what better to put on my name than my thoughts and experiences. Since then I've changed domains multiple times, started over even more than that and now just blog to keep people up-to-date for the most part.
A girl I used to know had a blog and I liked the idea. I was never good at keeping a journal or a diary but I've been blogging in some way or another since 2002. Of course, now that I wrote my own CMS I'm kind of getting bored with it.

Erm erm ... by answering to this post will make me quite emo...
At first I had loads of blog accounts, but eventually i terminated most of them because I was fed up that nobody reads it. That was 2 years back. And the moment I started blogging was when I really wanna talk about how painful my aunt was when she was diagnosed with cancer.
I found no friends to talk to so I decided to just write about what I felt for her, and even when I moved to this new blog, I was reluctant to even cancel the blogspot account because it has my dedication to her. My sweetest memory with her, like when I talked about how she remembered my kiss on her forehead 2 days before she passed away. That was sad.
But because of that post, I started to get noticed and it develops. So the reason why I get serious in blogging because of my aunt. Love ya! And rest in peace.
Ouch ouch... emo me.
I started wtricks and wrote articles for it. I realized I need to be less mean than I sometimes wished and that I had to set an example .. I am the admin in the end :D
So I started the blog to write about my experiences, what makes me mad and some advice in my own style ... it's not something to make a huge impression. I did write some good stuff and I struggle to not copy-paste information or offer just some redirects. It's about myself as a web designer, my struggles, the stupid things I do. It was from the first time my venting place :D

There was a time when I bombarded people on my email list daily with links to articles and other bits I thought they'd find interesting. Now I put all that stuff in my news blogs.

I haven't started yet. But I got interested in reading blogs and now I would like to try to do one of my own. I just think it would be a good outlet for me.

Dede & I were already hand-coding a journal of sorts about 5 years ago as a way to share pictures & interesting stuff with our friends & family. I migrated us over to Blogger about 3.5 years ago and we've just kept going since. We're not into blogging for profit - we just like being able to keep our friends up on the happenings in our lives, things we think are cool, and such. And it's been a neat way to make some new friends along the way.

Registered the domain about a year ago. Decided it was time to do something with it. I wanted to get rid of the articles on my portfolio site and I also wanted a place to publish my poetry and other personal writings.
Sara inspired me to get it going. :)

When I start my blog (hopefully next week) I'm going to write about crafts. It's a HUGE passion of mine and hopefully I can advertise myself that way because I also sell the stuff that I make.

I'm an avid weight lifter and participate in a ton of sports, so I've always had friends and family asking questions about fitness and lifting routines. My first blog was essentially an online journal where I would record my results from the evening before and answer questions.
After about a year of this I had to close the blog down because I graduated from college and didn't have time to keep it updated. Sometimes I still wish that I had stuck with it but either way it was a great learning experience.

You could say that I showed up to the party late. Then one day I submitted that if Search-This was ever going to survive I would have to kill the CMS system I rolled myself and move on to something more robust. Enter WordPress.
