i can see how having a niche/focused blog can help with getting readers and eventually some good source of income. i haven't decided on what to write about on my blog yet, i'm basically just making posts about whatever i've been learning about related to blogging just to keep the blog going and make it active. i wont be able to commit to posting very regularly for one more month, but in the meantime i'm trying to decide what topic i should write about.

how did everyone here choose what topics they wanted to write about? did you choose a few topics, then picked whichever one would make the most money (in your opinion), or did you go with whatever you liked best/your top choice?

my niche is my career, so it came naturally. It is easy to write about what you do for a living, but that can get boring at times as well.

okay but for example what if the topic of your career was one you thought no one would care to read a whole blog about? which would mean, it would be hard to make money off of. would you pick a new topic or stick with it and try to work it out?

I blog according to what I feel like blogging, I don't have a niche blog YET. But in future maybe? Cuz to me it's not easy to maintain the consistency of blogging in a niche blog so I might as well group them together. Like there will be reviews on movies I like, outing experience, humorous topics blah blah blah
Whatever that goes into my head!

I think there is an audience for every niche. Kind of like pr0n :p

I started them based on what interests me. My next one will be about the trials and triumphs of starting and running a community!

Well, to be sustainable, you have to blog about what you know and you have to enjoy writing about it. If what I did for a living didn't translate into a suitable blog topic, I'd have to find something else. But it would still have to be something I'm knowledgeable about and would enjoy writing about.

My first blog is about writing and since I'm a writer...well, that was kind of a natural.

My second blog is about weight loss. Basically, I wanted to lost weight and I knew I couldn't do it without a lot of motivation. What better motivation than a bunch of strangers watching to see whether or not I make my goal?

Yeah I think Jeremy is spot on. You definitely have to like the topic you right about or you will run out of ideas quick!

I have several blogs, one of which I started to protest against street harassmen against women. I chose to write about street harassment because it's something that I've perosnally dealt with and thought should be changed. I chose something that I wanted to help change and to make a difference in. I also find the subject quite interesting.

I to am looking into starting a blog but I want to do something that I know alot about so the blogging comes easy to me. Like raising sons and being a stay at home parent. Or I love to read so I have even thought about a blog reviewing the latest books out that I have read. Still up in the air on exactly what I will end up doing though.

My blog is about me, a subject that never fails to interest me. I am fascinating.
Ok, I am joking a little bit. But I do use my real life a lot. I like to complain a bit- mostly about rude people I come into contact with in the day to day of living in a rude city. This is a very rude city and so I always find stuff to write about.
I watch a lot of movies and write little blurbs about them or about the books I read.Or about my job. It's not hard to find something to write about. The hard part is making the mundane interesting to strangers. I don't think I always succeed.
I use spell check religiously.

I've been thinking about starting a new blog about my experiences at college. I get most of my ideas (like I said before) from my daily experiences and interesting encounters that I have, or even the negative aspects of life.

I write about my sites and things I like and dislike in web development. It's not such a good niche since it's oversaturated, but I like to write about these things

What I do came at a cost. I guess its a nitch but it came with alot of hard knocks. Experience is the key for me at least. The loss of several required body parts and the lack of help drives me to do what I do.

Here is an interesting question, how small is too small of a niche? I know Darren Rowse (Problogger) talked once about a niche blog that was only about one type of printer. Of course the obvious question, what happens when the manufacturer stops making it :)

I think there is an audience for every niche.

Yes, I agree. I've said it a few times before here and on my blog. There are some six billion people surfing the web today (and it's growing). Regardless of what your niche is, I can just about guarantee you someone out there has the same interest as you and can relate to your articles. The hard part is promoting your blog and getting the name out there so the people that share the same interest can find it. :-)
