If you had to sum up Professional Blogging in 5 steps,
what would they be?

Are you asking the steps required to become a professional blogger? Also, how do you define professional? Is it someone who makes money from blogging, makes their entire living off blogging, or just uses it to further their profession and gives themself more credibility, or something else entirely??

1) Think of an idea.
2) Buy a domain name, hosting, a pencil, and a notebook. If you aren't a designer, BUY A DESIGN. Free designs kill good blogs.
3) If you hear ANYTHING interesting that fits on your blog, write it down in your notebook. If you have 5 post ideas ready to go, spread them across a week, and you have an update everyday, and not 5 on one day. DEVELOP YOUR CONTENT.
4) When you've got a following, start selling advertising.
5) Lather, rinse, repeat.

This is all completely theoretical.

If you goal is to make your entire living off of blogging, good luck. I would not want to simply because I'm not interested in the high paying niches that are required if you want to make a lot of money via blogging. But if I had to:

1) Research high paying keywords
2) Buy domain and set up blog
3) Post very good, unique, informative content
4) Build links in a slow, organic matter
5) Repeat steps 3 and 4

3. Build traffic to your site.

4. Monetize your site though advertising, selling of services or products.
