View Full Version : How much time do you put into your average post?

For me on average I would say 10-15 minutes. I do have some that don't take any time to write, but others that I spend a good chunk of time on creating graphics, writing code, etc.
I think when people start out, sometimes they don't realize that sometimes writing a really solid blog post can take hours.

Yes, I agree, for some blog posts I needed even few hours (those are mostly related to programming topics), but others would take approx. 10 minutes. It really depends what I am writting on.

If I'm writing a serious post (about something other than myself and personal life) I'll usually take close to an hour to put it all together, get my wording refined and trimmed down to a good size. I tend to over-explain things, use too many words when a few will do, etc (plus I'm not a wordsmith). Usually I'll plan them out in my head, then I'll just write everything out fully. After that, I read it over and start "trimming the fat" to make it more readable.
Usually it turns out to be an hour of time spent on a decent post (which is rare for me to have an hour to spare ... thus the lack of said posts). ;)

My posts are very spare of the minute usually. I do not plan them out, or work on them from time to time. When I think of something to say I start typing. Then after I finish I re-read it and try to make it more literate. So I might spend 15-20 minutes on one but most of that is probably fixing typos and my english. :)
If I try to write something long and thought out I get bored, busy and forget to finish it.

I almost embarrassed to answer now... I usually spend hours writing a post. I would say easily over 3 hours per post...
I'm just not as talented as some. It floors me that some people can blog daily and do it well... I don't have that talent...

My posts take either 5 minutes to write or a couple of hours. They're either FYI type of posts or in depth informative rambles. I don't often find myself posting something in between.

Oh I have no talent for writing/publishing content. In fact it turns out I have nothing to say. Which is why my blog has been non updated for the last 3 months.
It took me 2-3 weeks to think up 5 things for that one post, then the last post was free promotion for Adobe. I have been working on a redesign for the last 2 months but have stared at it so long that I am just about sick of it already.
As far as the metal CD reviews. I struggle to come up with a few paragraphs to describe a CD that sounds just like the last one and the one before it and the one before that.

It takes me about that long for the posts I write at your blog. But this is more because I want to do an even better job than I normally would because it's not my blog.
Probably 10-20 minutes.
I sit down, decide what's on top for me and start typing. It all just pours out.

I don't spend nearly enough time. When you see a new post on my blog that means I just finished typing it a few seconds before and probably spent at most 30 minutes on it. I don't have a list of things to write, I don't have a bunch of stuff partially done, I just sit down, try to think of a topic and write it.
Unfortunately the lack of planning results in very little editing so I end up having a lot of minor errors that I have to go in and correct after I reread it again later. That is one area I need to improve on.

I've spent anywhere from 30 seconds (a quick funny image) to a few hours (a multipart article). Usually no more than 15 minutes or so though.

I generally only spend a couple of minutes per post but I am trying to change that.

I have some drafts that I've worked on for over a year. I have some that have at least 40 hrs invested in them. Some get turned into magazine articles. I also have some that are less than five minutes. It always surprises me when an off of the top of my head post succeeds.

I think you should put in what you can, with out making other areas of your life suffer.
everyone finds a balance with their blogging.

I'd say that it takes me about 20 minutes if I'm actually sitting down and typing something out. Since I am a student, I'll often write blogs on the weekends, and just post them every day or every other day so that I get enough blogs in on time. To publish the pre-written blogs, it usually takes 30 seconds.

For me, some posts are spontaneous & quick, but many are more involved, taking upwards of an hour or two - or more.
Other posts I leave germinating in Google Notebook for days or even weeks at a time. I revisit & tweak on them for awhile until they're either ready to publish or just toss if the idea isn't coming together.
And I usually have a couple of items I'm holding onto for later release. I have a "Back to School" post just about ready to publish, but waiting another couple of weeks...

I spend at least 2 hours on the writing part of a post. another 10 - 30 minutes on the graphic header for the post.
game and hardware reviews take significantly longer, especially games. I play the game whenever I'm free for a 2 week period. then I load some scenes to take screenshots.
after that I edit have to resize, watermark and rename the screenshots. upload them. then go back to my post, edit the post so that it links to my customized image loading page.
phew.......well yeah there. that's why I'm not a daily blogger, my Notebook Buying Guide took me a more than a week to finish. Of course I had other reviews that I was working on and my work in real life as a web designer.

I don't do much with graphics or programming--all my blog posts involve are writing. They usually take anywhere from thirty minutes to half an hour, sometimes up to an hour for longer posts.
10-30 minutes, depending on what I write and how long the post will be. I am a Romanian, so my English can be sometimes quite rusty.I am fortunate to not need a dictionary for every 2 words I write though :D

Anybody else have future posts that you kinda leave stewing for several days or even weeks at a time - or am I just kinda odd like that?

I tried doing that but I'd never get around to finishing them, or they'd be irrelevant/out of date by the time I would be ready to publish.

It's all relative to the subject at the time. Of course when I have a time crunch it takes longer.
