So, would it be a good idea for a beginner to maybe start a blog that is like a diary or daily journal just to start getting the hang of it?

It depends on why you're blogging, I think. If you're doing it for your own amusement and the entertainment of a few family members or friends, then a daily journal is great.

But if you're hoping to pick up a wider readership, you need some kind of focus. For instance, one of my blogs relates to reading and writing, and the other relates to my struggle to lose half my body weight over the next two years.

Mostly, I read the blogs of other writers, but I also enjoy a couple of X-rated (okay, NR-17) blogs and a couple of blogs related to cats (no, not the same ones).

Whatever you do, make sure you pick a topic you will enjoy writing about for weeks at a time! Good luck.

Personally I feel that if you wanna attract a wide range of readers, try to avoid talking about what shirt you wear for the day, what did you have for lunch blah blah blah. Try to talk about something controversial (if you dare), the main point is to wear the readers' shoes, imagine if you are a reader, will you like your blog?

I think if you want to make money, you blog has to provide some kind of values to readers. So I think a blog about personal life is really hard to capture a wide range of readers except there are a big group of people interested in your personal life.

I agree with the above posters who said that personal journal type blogs are good for yourself and family, but not many people want to read about somebody they don't really know. It might be a good way to start off and just get used to the idea of blogging. If you really want your blog to make it big, be controversial. I know that feminist blogs are one of the most popular out there, just because they are so controversial, with interesting content.
