Few years ago, my boss decided to offer all employees to have their own blog hosted on company's site. We were allowed to write about everything and anything, but occasional profession topic covered was kind of expected. That lasted for almost a year, but didn't lead to anything really.

Again, a year ago, my boss started company's blog again, which should cover only professional topics (development, programming, design etc..). Nobody is obligated to write, so usually that blog is not updated very often.

What do you think about company blogs? Is that a good idea?

In a sense that they're talking about the industry itself then it could be a good thing but if it's there just to push products then NO NO oh and NO!

I think for company blogs to work, they have to be more than an overt push for one's own products or services. And it should certainly be honest. Show that you're not perfect and how you've learned from X,Y, and Z.

I think it can be successful. As snookca said, it can't just be to plug a product or service. If the company is an expert in their field, or at least attempts to be, having meaningful blog posts about the field is certainly a positive thing for the business. Nothing is a better portfolio builder for potential clients and customers than a high quality blog.

Hmmm, interesting idea. I've never heard of that before. I would have thought it would be a little constricting...

I think company blog is a good way to show your busienss expertise to your customers. I also wish to keep a blog for my computer service business to show my customers how to solve their PC problems.
