My blog was recently rejected from a banner hosting site because they said it had 'innappropriate content', and I can't figure out what they could be refering to.

This is what the site lists asinappropriate content:

Sites with duplicate or copied content
All Pornography/Nudity/Sexuality
Spam
Racist Content
Copyright infringement
Illegal activities
Illegal Software/Hacking
URLs which are a referral/affiliate account for a parent site
Get Rich Quick site
Casino/Gambling site
Sites containing popup
Site that resizes the browser to full screen
Racist, sexist bulletin boards
If on a BBS, you must be moderated for foul and inflammatory language

Now, I haven't sworn (but have said 'darn', as in 'they're so darn cute')
There's no Pornography/Nudity/Sexuality, but I have mentioned 'cervical' as in 'Gardasil the cervical cancer vaccine'
I have had a spam comment, but it never got out of the line for modreationand so never appeared on the site.
And I don't have any of the others in that list.

So where is my 'inappropriate content'?

Do you discriminate against "Tea" at all, CoffeeLove?

Have you e-mailed them asking why you were banned?

Check the source code of your site. Someone I know just found out that through one of the wordpress exploits, someone had secretly injected hidden text and links into their site that pointed to drugs, porn, etc. It went undetected for well over a month.

If your not so hot on html and the source code means nothing to you, you can also simply click on your browsers Edit menu and use the select all function. This highlights all text and images on your page so invisible links show up. Just look for anything that you didn't put onto your page :)

As a former blog network owner, we ran into this all the time. Most of the major networks were automatically rejecting all blogs. You might want to contact them directly to be sure.

Blogs are still "new" to a lot of ad networks and they tend to think of them all as "personal journals".

What would you recommend as a good ad network to join Chrispian? I don't know a thing about ad networks.

Most of the adnetworks are going down hill. Even the ones that used to serve the best ads are now using those blinking, smilies, etc. ads that are so annoying. Tribal Fusion is still considered the best with some of the industries highest CPM rates, but the are also the hardest to get into. They have different requirements for different topics. For example, a women's interest site might only need 2000 uniques a day to get in while a gaming site would need a minimum of 25,000! So, the more saturated the market the more traffic you need to get in.

It will come down to how much traffic you have. If you're only doing a few thousand uniques a month you'll be stuck with places like ValueClick and a few others. They aren't bad at all, but their CPMs are a bit lower and they have a lot of those annoying... what I call "filler" type ads. Smilies, Dating, etc. They do get some good ones from time to time.

Obvsiously, if you can get them, direct ad sales are the best. I suggest going to Google and finding competition for your site - look at whose advertising on their sites and you've got your self a list of people who spend money in your niche! Then do some more Google research to find the contact for that advertiser and offer them some of your ad space. It's more work but you can often get 2-3 month deals and make more money.

Also, if your traffic is high enough you'll want to chain ad networks. Ad networks show a certain amount of ads to a single user before they "default".. If your traffic is high enough you'll want to have 2-3 ad networks so you can chain them. For example,

Tribal Fusion -> Default to ValueClick -> Default to Google Adsense -> Default to My Own Affiliate Ad

That way you have a higher chance of showing ads even when you have a high number of visitors who max out with one provider.
