Mark got me thinking in this post (http://www.theblogexperiment.com/blog-forum/showpost.php?p=12807&postcount=19). He says:

What can be frustrating is I never seem to get others to add our blog to their blogroll. I mean come on, does zeldman really need another link people :)

and he is right! I quite often see people linking to all of the big name bloggers and I wonder why not post to other blogs that people may not know of. what are your thoughts?

When I started blogging I used to link to bigger sites too - maybe I thought that would be cool back then in a "look, I read that too" kinda way ;). However, today I list only sites of people I know a little better or consider as friends in my blogroll - or sites which link to my site in their blog roll (given that I like the site) - or sites I'd like to promote a bit.

I have different sections to link to friends blogs etc as well as favourites.

I used to link to a lot more places, but I found that the majority of the new or smaller blogs went dormant, and there I was recommending the site to my readers when they haven't posted in months.

I should keep a better eye on those, but now I have no problem linking to newer or small sites, but if someone asks for a link, I just say that I'll check them out for a while first and make sure they seem to stick around and publish content I'd want my readers to read.
