Hi All!
I'm starting a blog in an uber competitive field (starting your own small business). What can I do to stand out and get visitors to my blog? Google is probably out of the question so how can I go about link building? Are there any other strategies to getting your blog noticed?
Thanks
Jeremy

One of the best things you can do initially is to visit the other blogs in your niche and get involved. Leave comments and occasionally link to them. Bloggers are an astute bunch and will notice you, which in turn will get them looking at your site. If you continue to create good content you will ultimately find some of those sites linking back to you as well.
So, first and foremost, create good content. Once you begin to have some content you should begin participating on the other sites in your niche. From there, you'll need to do the basics as well like getting an account on technorati, submitting to some blog directories, etc.

can you elaborate on the basics?

Sorry, by basics I just mean getting your site listed on as many of the free resources as applicible to your niche. So Technorati is the biggest, but beyond that doing things like putting the site in your signature on all of the forums you visit, etc. And if you do a google search for "blog directories" you'll find a lot of options.
That is by no means complete, but if there is a place you can add your site for free it is probably a good start before doing more targeted marketing.
EDIT: actually, who needs google when we have this http://www.theblogexperiment.com/blog-forum/showthread.php?t=108
