Earlier this week I was browsing through TVs worst ads (http://tvs-worst-adverts.co.uk) and I knew there was an ad I had seen here on TV but it completely didn't go with the product they were selling so I was searching to see if it was on his site, and sure enough, it was.
cadbury ad (http://tvs-worst-adverts.co.uk/cadburys-dairy-milk-gorilla-playing-drums/).
Don't get me wrong, its a great commercial and I really enjoyed it (big time genesis/phil collins fan) but I had no clue what the hell it had to do with chocolate :p
Then I saw it on another members blog here:
Martyns Blog (http://www.purplesunset.co.uk/main/martynblog/)
and he is right when he says, "Well showing the advert has obviously got people talking about the advert and therefore the brand involved (Cadbury’s). So therefore it’s not only getting exposure on telly and through video sharing sites such as youtube, but also via word of mouth"
I just find it neat when you run across two different valid outlooks on something that are relevant to their niche.
I love that ad, the guy in the guerrilla suit really makes it look almost believable that it's a real guerrilla :)
It is a very good advert, but a very bad chocolate advert, lol, but it does a good job getting people to talk about it which is what the advertising game is all about I suppose.

Oh, I didn't like it at all. Boring, if you ask me, and have nothing to do with chocolate. But that's not the worst commercial I've seen.

I like the advert. Its totally crazy and has nothing to do with chocolate but I like it anyway!
Doesn't make me wanna buy cadburys at all, but most adverts don't work anyway do they?

To be fair, the purple/blue colour used in the advert is easily associated with Cadbury's. Well it is to me... ;)
Now I want some chocolate!

I think it's a quality video clip and some fantastic creativity but it's a crap advert.
Let me explain a little. It may have people talking about it and telling their friends/family about it. They are most likely to mention it is a Cadbury's advert too. Great advert then hey? No.
The objective of an advert is not simply to get people to remember the advert. It's to get people to buy your product and remembering a musical gorilla doesn't make you want chocolate I'm afraid. Word of mouth promotion is great but just because people are talking about it, doesn't mean they're going out to buy it.

LOL, ive never seen that commercial before and I loved it. The genius is that it doesn't NEED to have anything to do with chocolate. A strong advertisement grabs your attention and evokes emotion, whether it's positive or negative.
So in that sense they totally did their job.
As far as the two different opinions on blogs thing. I believe thats a characteristic that a strong blogger should have. Being able to communicate different sides to one story. Even if you don't necessarily agree with it.
That is especially useful in an instance where a piece of news breaks. It will be on 20 blogs within 2 hours, so how do you stand out from the pack?

That ad has *everything* to do with chocolate. If you're a huge chocolate fan who has gone without or has even been stuck eating cheap chocolate for a while and then you get the chance to jump at sensational chocolate....ohhhh yeaaahhh. Just sitting, closing your eyes, feeling the world around you, and then it hits. You've been waiting for the moment so long and finally you bite into the most wonderful piece of chocolate in the world, sinking your teeth into heaven and completely feeling the moment.
Oh yeah...I'm totally connecting with the drummer. That feeling is irreplaceable. It may not be Cadbury that does it for me, but the ad definitely reaches into that sense of peace a person gets when he/she finally reaches a platform of serenity....whether it be getting up on stage, getting into the moment of drumming, or tasting Cadbury chocolate. Ahhh....

You see, this is a concept that professional marketers absolutely HATE to acknowledge even exists, and will try to cover it up by using jargon. It's called "word of mouth marketing" - and when you think about it when done properly can threaten their very job security that they love so much.
Now also bear in mind that I don't own a TV anymore...

Yeah, it's pretty convincing, isn't it? So much so that....
A few days before the ad was shown on the TV it was doing the rounds on the Web. I sent a link to a colleague of mine but I didn't say what it was for.
I think he managed about 10 seconds before the gorilla's flared nostrils and half closed eyes convinced him it was something he shouldn't be watching at work. \:D/
And he felt a mixture of relief and disappointment when he discovered the ad wasn't quite what he thought it was though...

I've never watched, heard or read an advert in my life that has made me want to buy something. I have however seen a few, like this, that I've then had numerous conversations with people about.
From a brand awareness point of view (which is a key performance measure to lots of advertisers) this advert hits the mark.
From a products sold point of view, I'm willing to bet that there has been a small spike in purchasing even though I've not met anyone who has gone out to buy Cadburys as a result of seeing this.
