That's me. I have thought about blogging, bought a domain for blogging, and today finally got an idea for my first blog post but... how to start
My webhost has a stripped down version of WordPress, but I have a special graphic that I want either on the page or in the header, so I downloaded the full WordPress. Believe me, the five minute installation is like asking for a fast-food hamburger with no pickles. :(

So I am assuming you downloaded and then decide to FTP all of your files? Tell us your steps and we will certainly hold your hand :p

Definately. How far have you gotten so far?
The first thing I do before I install WordPress is create a database. I just go into my site's control panel and use it to create a database, assign a name and password to it. Nothing else.
Then I'll edit the config.php file (or whatever it's called) to include the login information, then upload via FTP and let the script handle the rest.

I created the database, the MySql thingy (a programmer I'm not!) and have ftp'd the word press files ( I hope :o )

Have you modified the config.php file?

modified the config.php file. Uploaded everything and lost my main site (shyflower's). Had to re upload that and delete the Older Space (someday to be my blog) because of course when I re-uploaded, Shyflower's, all those files became accessible in Older space. Right now, I have taken all my sites except for Shyflower's out of ftp. Very depressing.
I'm going to call one and one and let them sort it out tomorrow. :(

Linda, I will be more than happy to assist you to get WP up and going.

Well if it's any consolation, it sounds like it is your host's issue and not the software. The software really is very quick to get up and running if the environment allows for it.

Something occured to me last night about 1&1 they do not have there DB's at localhost it is at like db.perfora.net so if you have left the wp-config.php file set to localhost it needs to be changed. If not, ignore this post completely. :)

Okay, now you can all see how clueless I really am. My web space comes with a default ftp account. As long as you only have one domain, that's all you need. However, when you have more than one domain you need more than one ftp account.... and so after configuring individual ftp accounts for all of my domains I have installed wordpress and so far (cross your fingers for me please)
things are going well. However it still may be next week (or next month) before I figure out how to make a post.
and Ben... Thanks. I saw that in the config.php file. I don't know if I've got it right yet, but if I don't, I'm sure your info will help!

Okay, I have entered the world of the blogger. I don't know if I 've come through the front door, the back door, or through a window -- but I think I'm inside.
Leave the lights off. It's better that way.
